If you have been reading these blog posts, you know I have two sisters. I am the youngest of the three, so I always looked up to my sisters and felt they had my back if I needed them.
They are both very close, but of course we didn’t always feel close growing up. It often felt like one sister got the “favorable” treatment, even though now I can see that our parents were amazing and made sure we each received equal treatment.
For example, my sisters’ birthdays are two years and one day apart. Yes, one day. One day to make each child feel that their birthday was important, so they wouldn’t feel left out.
During those two days, we had two birthday cakes, complete with decorations and the “Happy Birthday” writing Mom did herself. Our mom didn’t need to buy a pre-decorated cake. She made the roses, leaves, and borders for every birthday until we moved out. Think about that… two fully decorated cakes in two days.
As adults, we often celebrate their birthdays together. We do not live in the same state, and we no longer want (or need) two cakes even when we are together. But we still celebrate each sister with cards, online or mailed, and try to talk on the phone when our schedules allow.
I hope they both know how much they each were and are loved by everyone else in the family. And yes, I still celebrate each on their individual birthdays with a call and a card.
